THE PAST

Mar Thomas Tharayil

In 1962, MAR THOMAS THARAYIL, Bishop of Kottayam, in collaboration with the selected few of German benevolent people started the venture of health care naming it ‘CARITAS’. The word itself adheres to the recommendations of the 1946 Bhore committee report “to ensure medical care for every individual including those who cannot pay for it’’. Inefficiency of the system, deficiency of proper planning, lack of true commitment and above all, wide spread corruption, have led to the deplorable situation that the health mission of ‘CARITAS HOSPITAL’ has to play a vital role in alleviating pain of the sick and the suffering, especially to those who cannot afford adequate treatment. Spread over 25 acres of scenic hinterlands, 4 kilometers from Government Medical College and just seven kilometers from Kottayam, CARITAS is the embodiment of modern medical care.

THE PRESENT
The unconditional support and enlightened vision of MAR KURIAKOSE KUNNACHERY, the Bishop of Kottayam, the hospital has grown to a world-class manifold academic and community based hospital that is from a 50-bedded hospital to a 635-bed strength hospital. Footing on the strong guidance of MAR MATHEW MOOLAKKATT, the Archbishop of Kottayam, the hospital is growing to its renowned heights. It now cares more than 3 lakhs OUT PATIENTS and almost 50,000 IN-PATIENTS each year. The hospital has 33 clinics in the Out Patient department and 25 wards in the In Patient department. In addition there is a full-fledged Emergency and Trauma care unit also. Authentic and well-versed Administration, senior doctors and energetic and aspiring junior doctors do work as a team to uphold the health care system the hospital has earned its cherishing and memorable years of service in the sphere of health care. Self immolated and christianized charity motivated religious sister nurses and service- based staff nurses and student nurses, the nursing service department excels. Committed and skilled paramedical services and other hard working auxiliary services do make the hospital the best in central Kerala.

HISTORY
Caritas Hospital foundation stone laid by H. E Cardinal Tiserang in the presence of Mar Thomas Tharayil on 27 th November 1953. The site of the hospital about six acres in area was donated by late Mr. Joseph Vallapally’s wife and children. Caritas Hospital Established in 1962 by Mar Thomas Tharayil, Bishop of Kottayam, in collaboration with the selected few benevolent German people with just 50 beds. The prime aims Maternity care and Snake bite management. Dr. Peter Rohde MD from Germany was the first Doctor. Caritas School of Nursing was founded in 1965 by Bishop Mar Thomas Tharayil. The School provides 3½ year General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course with a strength of 50 students in each batch.

Kerala’s first Dialysis Unit started in Caritas Hospital. Artificial Kidney & Intensive Coronary Care Inaugurated by Shri N.N Wanchoo (Hon: Governer of Kerala) and blessed by Most Rev. Dr. Kuriakose Kunnacherry on 28th september 1975.

 Caritas College of Pharmacy, Since it had its starting from 1981, Caritas College of Pharmacy situates within the premise of Caritas Hospital and it was established in 23rd March 1987 under the eminent guidance and vision of his excellency Mar Kuriakose Kunnussery, the Bishop of Kottayam. conducts the D.Pharm course with an intake of 60 students per year. Shalom Hostel started in 1994 for Hospital staffs & Pharmacy College Students.
Caritas Hospital Trust has been registered in 1995 as a Public Charitable Trust with Reg. No.510/IV/1995. Msgr. Jacob Kollaprambil was the first Chairman

Bishop Tharayil block (BT Block) constructed in 1997. It has almost a hundred rooms and wards, in six floors.


Caritas College of Nursing started in 2002 for Bsc Nursing programme. BSc Nursing course and has an intake of 50 students per year. Honorable Former President of India laid the foundation stone for the construction of its esteemed building.

 Caritas Cancer Institute is a 82-bedded centre with Medical, Surgical and Radiation Oncology departments as well as a Pain and Palliative Care division. Cancer Center is a long cherished dream project of Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry, the Bishop of Kottayam.  It was inaugurated on February 24, 2003.  The centre is equipped with two linear accelerators for radiation teletherapy.Dr.Mary Kalapurakal, the head of the pain & palliative Dep. in caritas is the founder & 1st president of palliative assossiation in Kottayam district.  Cancer patients can get Surgical, Medical and Radiation Oncological Treatment all under one roof. Palliative care for patient and family is available in the Cancer Institute. In the last seven years more than 10,000 cancer patients have been operated. More than 7,000 patients have received radiation treatment and 25,000 and more patients have been treated for medical oncology. Thousands of patients and relatives make use of our Palliative Care Unit which even offer home care treatment. Our radiation Department has got state of the art Radiation Treatment with facilities for External Beam Radiation (Teletherapy) and Internal beam Radiation (Brachytherapy).  The first Director of this institute is Msgr. Jacob Kollaparambil.
Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing Course started in 2005 with 25 seats.Caritas College of Nursing affiliated is declared as a Minority Educational Institution as per F.NO.235 of 2006 dated December 11, 2007.

Mar Mathew Makil 

In 2008 The hospital runs a full range of medical and surgical acute services. The newly constructed Bishop Makil block (Bishop Mar Mathew Makil ) has a hundred and thirty pay ward rooms, seven operating theatres, and modernized facilities for obstetrics & gynecology, cardiothoracic surgery, centralized intensive care unit, modernized laboratory, and blood bank

Caritas Heart Institute was inaugurated and blessed on 24 September 2011. It has South india’s First Hybrid CathLab, Two state of the art Operation Theaters, 24 bedded Cardic Intensive Care Unit, 14 bedded post operative ICU, Hi-end Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory & Well equipped 24 hours mobile emergencyThe cardiology department at this hospital has completed 25 years of service to the community. The department has earned a great reputation for rendering excellent service in the past with one of the third in Indian subcontinent. Interventional Cardiologists, American trained Cardiac Surgeon and a Cardiac Anesthesiologist with vast experienced have been posted . Facilities for Angioplasty, Bypass surgery, Valve repair, Baloon dilatation of the valves, Valve replacement surgery, Pacemaker Implantation etc are available in the new complex. In addition to this there is a Research cell in the cardiology department which participates in multiple multi centre international research studies.
